My research in to the Openshaw family history has truly been a labor of love. Of all of my various genealogical pursuits, none other has led me to so many new and meaningful relationships. Here in the United States the name Openshaw is very much an oddity, but with the aid of this web site, we have gathered into quite a respectable gang from all over the world. Without the help of Peter Duxbury, Nigel Openshaw and Roy Openshaw, as well as various other contributers, this project certainily would have never amounted to much of anything. But now it can be properly refered to as "the authentic world-wide Openshaw site". (Thank you Peter for the title!) My
personal focus at this time is finding where John Openshaw (b. abt 1790)
of Oldham, Lancashire, fits into the larger Openshaw family tree. Our
Openshaw branch came to Newport, Rhode Island in 1860 from Cheshire, England
with James, b. 1839 at Ashton, Cheshire, (picture at right) being the
immigrant. He became a very successful plumber in Newport, Rhode Island,
outfitting many of the mansions created in America's victorian age and
during the industrial revolution. His descendants are scattered over the
eastern seaboard with a large proportion of them around Washington, D.C. Other
