Subject: Ramsdell Query
My grandfather has been working on our Ramsdell family history for a number of years and has been unable to connect further back than his great-great grandfather. Everything we know comes from within our home state of Ohio which from what I see on your sight is a bit sketchy. Here's what I have: My grandfather is Paul Dempster Ramsdell born in Hardin County, Ohio on March 18, 1914 and married November 24, 1938 to Virginia Eastman born March 31, 1913. His father was Warren "Blaine" Ramsdell born in Allen County, Ohio on December 25, 1890 and married June 25, 1913 to Lucy Leone Dempster born November 19, 1890. His father was Lester Wesley Ramsdell born in Medina County, Ohio on November 21, 1838 and married January 29, 1889 to Mary Emma Shockey born September 3, 1855. Beyond that, my grandfather only has that Lester's parents were John Ramsdell and Mary Lawrence who were married in Medina County, Ohio. I'm looking to confirm this and to make a connections as far back as possible. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. I'm doing this as a gift to my grandfather who is now unable to continue the work himself. Thanks. Keith Ramsdell keith.ramsdell@utoledo.edu

I'm trying to research a Luella Ramsdell from Lubec, ME who married my mother's father, William F. Bell of St. Andrews, NB sometime after 1915. In reviewing your Ramsdell genealogy, I found a Liewellyn Ramsdell born in 1864 who unfortunately does not show up in your fifth generation listing. My grandfather was born in 1877, which would make him about 38 in 1915 when he was widowed and Liewellyn would have been 51 which seems a bit old, but could be. Any enlightenment you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Dick Knapp

I have seen the name on a few other web sites; Surely some one has the proof - I have seen it on "Oxford Roots" and the among the names listed are Andrews, Bartlett, Chase, Laphan, Perkins, Ramsdell, and Turner.

I have been trying to find more information about my grandmother, Helen C. Ramsdell who spent the better part of her life in Eastport, ME. She was born in 1899 (where?) and died in 1968 (Eastport). She married my grandfather, Everett C. Malloch in Eastport on November 28, 1917. They had several children but I don't know their names except for my father, James Everett Malloch. I would love more information if anyone has something to add. Thanks for the great web site! Rosann M. Malloch

Hi. My name is Robert Ramsdell and I was born in Lynn Mass (don't reside there anymore.) Out of all the Ramsdell I've found in various web sites, I cannot trace my link to any of them and I'm hoping you can help. Do you have any information on: Nathan Ramsdell married Susan (or Suckey) Sudan Wyman on 12-29-1818. Children were: Susan Jane, and Nathan Adams. Nathan A. married Sarah A. Pulney on 12-20-1846. Children were: Charles A., Susan E. and Henry H. Charles A. married Eola Marcia Lummus on 11-20-1873. Children were Ethel May, Edward Earl, and George Herbert. George Herbert had a Herbert and he had me. I also believe there is a Joseph Ramsdell married to Juney (or Janey) in my line - maybe just before the first Nathan. If you have the time and any information you can e-mail me at: wlynner@discoveromaha.com. Thanks Bob

Subject: Ramsdill Family
Greetings from Saratoga Springs, NY!! My husband and I were so excited to find your website! William Ramsdill, son of Aaron Ramsdill and SarahClements (Sally was her nickname) is my husband's great-great grandfather. We have extensive history on this side of the family and I'm proud to say there's still a strong line of Ramsdills here in Saratoga Springs. There is a wonderful old family cemetery here and I'd love to combine our records with yours to get a bigger picture of the family. Our records go back to John Ramsdill born in England in 1602. We have a lot of the same names as you, but many of our dates differ. We don't have great confidence in some of our older information but the old cemetary and family bible give us great confidence in the info we have on Jonathon (son of Kimball) to present. We also have old family photos of Jonathon's children and more recent family. We'd love to share this information with you if you're interested and compare what you have on the older records of the family. Please email us at cbramsdill@aol.com if you're interested. Sincerely, Chris and Dione Ramsdill

Ross, I have been looking at your website. It is very good. I want to give the following info that I could not find on your site. I have been doing research on our lines and have a Ramsdale/Ramsdell in our tree: Mary Ramsdale/Ramsdell. Her name is spelled both ways in her marriage certificate and her daughter's birth certificate. Mary was born in Thompsonville, CT. Mary married a George A/H. Abbe in Enfield, CT. Their marriage certificate says 25MAY1835 and recorded 25JUN1835. The certificate does not give her parents' names. I am guessing that Mary was born in the period 1815-1819. George and Mary had a daughter, Ellen Maria Abbe, born in Enfield, CT in 1834/35. I have not been able to get a copy of her birth certificate, but other records, i.e. her own marriage certificate, her child's records show Ellen was born in Enfield. Ellen is our connection to the Ramsdell/Ramsdale line. I have no information on George except that he is supposed to have been born in NY according to marriage info. I hope this information is useful to your research and perhaps you may have a lead for me. Karl E. Wahl Bellevue, WA

I am currently looking for information on Daniel (Jack) Ramsdell, who
married Phoebe Jackson. He was the son of Capt. T. J. Ramsdell

1879. He had a sister named Ida, who married Willis Kilbey, and a 2nd

I saw you post on the York County, Maine USGenWeb

Hello, I was looking to establish some information on our line of Ramsdells. This is what I have to date: Eben H. Ramsdell - Born in Gray Maine. Eben was enlisted in the Company B, 25 Regiment Maine Volunteers Inf, on September 10, 1862. He died about 1896 in Falmouth Forside Maine. He married Dorkas A. Merril who died July 2, 1920. They had at least one son. His name was Lawrence Ramsdell and his wife's name was Estella. Lawrence was a builder and resided in Falmouth Forside Maine. There is a road there named Ramsdell Road and Lawrence built most of the houses on it. Estella and Lawrence had on son, Howard Ramsdell. Howard was my Grandfather. He died in 1968 in RI. Any early information on this line of Ramsdells?

I was given your web site when I complained about not much on New England Ramsdells on the rootsweb list. I am impressed with all the Ramsdells out there. How come there is nothing on the Malden, MA Ramsdells - which of many have the same names as your Lynn ones. I go back to Joseph Ramsdill who married Rachel Teale abt 4/24/1727. They died early, about 1745 - and their son Deacon John Ramsdill, b. 4/5/1741 in Malden, married Mary Sweetser 9/16/1764 - had a son John 4/19/1771 who married Lydia Howard 10/8/1793 - had a son Amos 10/16/1800 who married Phebe Wait 3/5/1822 - had a son Reuben RAMSDELL 7/28/1841 who married Georgiana Green abt. 1871 (dau. of James Green & Julia Folansbe). They are my great grandparents - and at this point of line the name is spelled with an e and their son Albert Rueben Ramsdell moved to Stoneham to live with his grandfather James S. H. Green (son of the 6th Jonathan Green in the same house - next door to mine). The Green house was built around 1720. James S.H. built ours (which I sold when my mother died few years ago.) I am trying to locate the parents of Rachel ____ who married Henry Salisbury abt. 1800. They had at least 2 kids John H. Salisbury b.1807 and Anna Maria Salisbury b.1812 - both in Schoharie Co. NY. Anna married James O. Swartwout (son of Aaron Swartwout and Maria Mynar m.1805 Schoharie Co). Anna and James named their first son John Ramsdell Swartwout. In checking both sides of his ancestors the only blank is for Rachel who was probably born around 1773 and there are no other Ramsdell's in this line. Cyreness shows up on the 1850 Canajohare, Montgomery, NY census and is living with a much younger couple (I assume kids or grandkids). I haven't looked at it for awhile but the couple he is living with are also Salisbury's (or the wife's maiden name was Salisbury). On the 1860 census Syrenius is in Sharon, Schoharie Co which is also where many of the Salisbury's lived. James O. Swartwout was a shoemaker in Argusville, Schoharie, NY and I have noticed many Ramsdell's were also shoemakers. On the 1860 census for Lancaster, Erie, NY John Ramsdell Swarthout is living in the American Hotel and also in the hotel is a Ramsdell who is listed as a shoe salesman. My thought is that Rachel _______ is a Ramsdell and possibly desc from Rachel (Eaton) Ramsdell and that Cyreness is her father. Anything you can offer will be greatly appreciated. By the way, my grandfather married Carrie Herwig @ 1916 (my grandmother will be 104 in February) and they had two child Donald Ramsdell who had three children, my cousins Phyllis, Charles and Paul and my mother who had my sister's Lynn, Mary Lou and myself. Aunt Katherine did ! not have any children but my grandfather's younger brother Robert had a son also Robert who had four children Cheryl, Ray, Irene and Ilene. Ray now farms the family farm inherited from Ferris through Robert and Donald farms the one from Ferris through Charles. Since my grandfather was born in 1888 I assume either his father Ferris or his grandfather must have come to Illinois around the middle of the 19th century. Thank you for you site and any additional information you might have. Peter Ramsdell Lippert P.S. either peter_lippert@hotmail.com or Peter Ramsdell at aol will reach me.

I have enjoyed browsing through your site. I am new to geneology but I am interested in tracing my family line. I am David Ramsdell Father is William Ramsdell born in Northern Wisconsin in 1920s, married Opal Adams, daughter of Robert Adams of Kentucky who was son of Andrew Jackson Adams...family lore is that they are descended from President John Adams, but I have not been able to find the connection. Grandfather is Jesse Ramsdell (married Mary Kelnhoffer)...I believe he lived in Wisconsin but I am not sure where he was born Great Grandfather was William Ramsdell. I have no information on him. I have been searching for a William Ramsdell who had a son named Jesse, but I have been unsuccessful. Do you know any lines that went to Wisconsin or UP Michigan???? We even have a Ramsdell lake in northern Wis, named after William I think, but I seem to be at an impass. I would appreciate any help if you have the time Sincerely, David Ramsdell neondr@bigfoot.com

Hi Pat, It's funny how this stuff just sits around and then all at once you have a need to take a look and you find some obvious errors. This what I have: Joseph 1620 line: RUFUS Ramsdell, was born on 21 Jan 1800 in Pembroke, Plymouth, Maine. He married Alice Baily on 28 Oct 1827 in Greene, Maine. Alice was born in 1805. She died on 18 Jan 1832. He married Hannah Draper on 21 Oct 1832 in Leeds, Maine. They had the following children. Irene, born in 1829 Mary, Born in 1831 Alice Baily, born 2 Apr 1836, Turner, Maine. She married Orin Campbell Bryant on 4 Jan 1871, Hartland, Maine. Ruth, born in 1842 Note: A male child born in Leeds, Maine, Sep 1834 Questions: If Rufus was married to Alice 1827 to 1832, wouldn't you think that children Irene and Mary belong to Alice and not Hannah? Unless there are other children that you are aware of, there is probably no way to determine if he was married to someone before Alice. Pat, let me know what you think and if my info appears to be correct. I have included Ross, he might have more insight. Don Brown

Subject: Albert Ramsdell
Do you have any guesses as to how Albert Ramsdell might be related to other branches you have researched? I'm doing work for a museum house in Groton, Connecticut, the Avery-Copp House. The house was rebuilt and furnished by Albert Ramsdell c. 1860. Thanks, Mary Beth Baker in New London, Conn. Here's all I have on Albert: Albert Ramsdell (May 12, 1816- May 10, 1873) of Mansfield, Conn., from a numerous family. (Parents: Isaiah and Clarissa Ramsdell) Left his father's farm at 16 and came to New London to work at a "shoe house" of an elder brother. He became a clerk, then a partner, and finally went into banking. "He was a natural financier and became president of the New London City Bank and Pres. of the New London Northern RR Co....His large means were never withheld from any local enterprises which were calculated to promote the interests of the community..." (Hist. of New London County, 1882, p. 462). He was first married to Caroline White of New London. She died in 1839, apparently without children. It seems likely that Albert was related to a Mary Ann Ramsdell, who married in 1834 Sidney Miner, a partner of Joseph Lawrence's (one of NE's wealthiest whaling magnates.) With Ramsdell a name connected with Nantucket and Whaling, perhaps there was some business dealings there as well? His second wife was Mary Jane Avery (m. 1847 in Brooklyn, NY) of Groton, Conn. The couple lived in Mary Jane's house on Groton Bank (overlooking New London harbor) and renovated and furnished in the latest Victorian style. The house today looks much as it did then. Mary Jane was left a rich widow, and without children, she left the house and its contents to a niece, Bessie Avery Copp. Bessie's descendants gave it to the Antiquarian & Landmarks Society, Inc., a museum organization in Conn. The house is a time capsule full of treasures, but there is almost nothing related to "Al," as he was called. Date: Sat, 23 Sep 2000 14:07:35 EDT

When he was approx. 2 or 3 yrs old was given to a Ramsdell family to raise or adopt. He ran away from them when he was about 13 yrs old. I am unable to get any record of a possible adoption because of the Maine Courthouse fire of 1908. His name was Harold Charles______? either Smith, Ramsdell etc. Has anyone come across any Harold Charles in the 1900 census in a Ramsdell household in Maine, most likely Cumberland or Oxford county(Hebron area)? He changed his last name to Loveitt, whether legally or? sometime later. He would have been 3 or 4 in the 1900 census. Thanks,Shelley

In your genealogy pages, you show two Seth Ramsdells both born in Pembroke about 6 years apart, one a son of Nehemiah and Rebecca (Chamberlain) Ramsdell, the other a son of Gideon and Sarah (Nash) Ramsdell. If you have any further information about either Seth that might help me determine which was the father of Lucy, I would appreciate it. Is the name of the book on Ezra Bowen Ramsdell Eliza A. Sheldon;1934? In your notes it says that was you source. I thought it was a living person. Do you know anything about any of Esther Bown Ramsdell's brothers? Why did they move to Vincennes, Indiana? Do you know? What does it mean "Ezra was involved with the Pork business.?" Was he a butcher, hog farmer, wholesaler, (politician?)! I joined the Vincennes, Indiana genealogy club and got nothing from them so your information was like discovering a gold mine. My mother , Esther K. Tindolph, left a few notes concerning the Ramsdells. George Ramsdell was the founder of the American Gas Co and at the time of his death (80+) years old he was librarian to the gas company in N.Y. city until a few days before his death resulting from pneumonia. Horace Ramsdell was the Secretary Treasure of Lipman Wolfe Department Store in Portland, Oregon (I don't believe Lipman Wolfe exists anymore). My notes say that Susan A. Gould (Ezra's wife) was born in Middle Town, Rhode Island , September 7, 1820 After Charles E. Ramsdell I have Daniel Gould Ramsdell born in Scituate, RI, January 30, 1852 and died in Vincennes, Indiana July 1, 1869 at the age of ll years and 4 months and Horace D. Ramsdell born in Cranston, R.I. May 31, 1856 and John Ramsdell born in Philadelphia, Penn. February 5, 1860 and died in Vincennes, Indiana May 2, 1861, at the age of 15 months and 21 days old. and Walter Thompson Ramsdell born August 31, 1862 in Vincennes, Indiana and died July 9, 1864, in Vincennes. These notes are handwritten. I do have a typewritten list and some of the dates differ a wee bit. What I find more interesting than names and dates is how they made their living , the stories, their illnesses, education, talents, etc. Were they musical, artistic., scientific, etc. Do you know any of the stories connected to any of the people listed? If so I would very much appreciate hearing them. Is anyone adding to the Ramsdell genealogy to bring it up to date? Thank-you again for all the information you have sent to me. What a windfall! We do not know much more than my mom thought his father's name was Elijah. From the most magnificent work you have put together, I have been trying to see how we fit in the Lubec scheme. From all your work I think we are either from John (3) Ramsdell , son of Timothy (b. 1785) or from Timothy's brother, Ebenezer's lineage, which could be the case. They seem to think Elijah was married to a Sarah, which doesn't follow on Timothy's side even with the two Sarah wives of Elijah, the following names didn't fit. Do you have any info at all or where I can look to check on Ebenezer' 2 side? Good Morning My name is Richard Ramsdell. I was born in Stockbridge, Michigan in 1942. I currently live in Romeo, Michigan. I can go back in family history in the following style. My father's name was Paul Cecil Ramsdell (1913-19750 My grandfather was Guy Jay Ramsdell (born Ramsdill) 1884-1938, Guy had two brothers, Miles (1885-1950's) and Orson (1888-1948) and a sister, Grace (1890-1918). All were born in Stockbridge, My great grandfather was Van Rensaler Ramsdill (1845-1895). He had 6 brothers and sisters. The ones I am aware of are Newton (1848-1907), Stillman (1846-1965), who may have died in the Civil War, Ella and John. Newton had one child, Daniel Ramsdill. Ella and John I don't know. All lived and died, or are at least buried, in the Stockbridge area. Except that I don't know about Ella and John. My great great grandfather was Rensaler Ramsdill. He moved from Genesee County, New York in 1835, Homesteaded in Monroe Country, Michigan, near the village of Dundee. He married Christian Sanford the same year, in Monroe County and, some how or other, eventually wound up in the Stockbridge area. I believe his father's name was Rueben Ramsdill. Rensaler had at least one brother, Alfred Ramsdill, who also settled in the Stockbridge area and pehaps another, Moses, who settled near Grand Rapids, Michigan, specifically, Alpine Township. Rensaler lived from 1812 to 1899. Alfred from 1817-1866 and Moses from 1809-1890. Whether we are connected to the rest of the Ramsdells, et al, I don't know. Would appreciate it if you let me know whether there's a connection. Thank you Dutch Ramsdell bdutchram@ees.eesc.com

In your database, you have Martha Basley married to Samuel Ramsdell (#577) and Martha J. Basley married to Lemuel Ramsdell (#945) on the same date. The Lubec records have the marriage to Lemuel (not Samuel). Also, the 1811 Lubec census has a widow Sarah who appears to be Sarah (Newhall) Ramsdell but you have her husband William (#137) dying in Essex, Essex, MA in 1817. Since the children are in Lubec in 1811 and were is Eastport for several years before (no move, Lubec was incorp. in 1811 from part of Eastport), I suspect either the death is a different William OR she lived as a widow while her husband lived in MA. IF it's the right Sarah, she has an additional daughter, Hannah, born in Eastport 17 May 1788. Hannah had a daughter Sophia born in Eastport 9 Oct 1808, then married (int 01 Jan 1812) Matthew Lyon and had 9 childrenby him.

Seeking info on a father and sons who came to Ohio before 1812. They defended Marblehead Peninsula against the savages at start of War of 1812. Valentine (16 years) died in the attack. Salima Wolcott, b. 1798 in Danbury CT m. Joseph Ramsdell 1816 in Huron County, Ohio. When Joseph died at Bloomingville, OH she wed his widowed brother, Jacob Ramsdell. Her sister, Phoebe Wolcott b. 1796 Catskill, N.Y., wed Truman Pettibone 1814, Newburgh, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Their son, Albert wed ___________Ramsdell. In a letter from Eli Barnum, 18 March 1813 to Zalmon Wildman of Danbury Conn. there is reference to the Ramsdells: " Mr. Mix, who lived on the Peninsula last Summer, have been living on there this Winter keeping Cattle, with two of Mrs. Ramsdall's sons." also "When I wrote you last Autumn Mr. Ramsdall wished me to ask you if you would take back one of the lots of land you sold him. I think it was Lot No. 16 or 17. He said the times was so hard on him that he did not see how he could pay you for all the land he had contracted for. The old gengelman felt almost discouraged. He was then lame from a wound he had received in an engagement on the Peninsula with the Savages, and the loss of his youngest son at the time filled him with grief. I conclude he felt different than he would if he had not left his son weltering in his blood and his body to be mangled by the tomohawk and scalping knife. Mr. Ramsdall lives at present with his family at Grand River on the Purchase." A monument in tribute to the slain stands in Danbury Twp. near the site of the attack and just west of the home of first settler, Benajah Wolcott whose grandson Albert married a Ramsdell. If you have any information of this Ramsdell branch, I will appreciate it. Thank you. Subject: George Ramsdell & Eunice Burnell
I recently found your Ramsdell site which I greatly appreciated. I wanted to ask you about Eunice Burnell, wife of George Ramsdell (6) (Jonathan (5, 4, 3) Isaac (2), John(1)). Your records stated she was born in 1758. According to the Nantucket VRs (from the Folger Collection), Eunice was the daughter of Jonathan Burnell & Deborah Barker. Deborah was born in Sandwich, MA on 6 OCT 1712, the daughter of Samuel Barker & Deborah Wing (Sandwich VRs I:94). It is unlikely (but possible) that Deborah would have given birth to a child in 1758, when she would have been 46 years of age. What was your source of information for her birthdate of 1758? I am in the process of tracing all male & female descendants of John & Deborah (Bachiler) Wing and have started a website (using UFT) at: http://www.uftree.com/UFT/WebPages/RaymondWing/WINGDESC/index.htm I would appreciate hearing from you. Hi Ross: James Adams was an indentured servant whose services were sold to the Saugus Iron Works by the King of England as a result of his capture by Oliver Cromwell at the Battle of Dunbar (in Scotland) on 3 Sep 1650. This is a battle that the Scots should have won, but didn't. He was shipped to the Colony of Massachusetts on the "Unity" arr. 1651. I have Scot prisoners indentured to the Saugus Iron Works by the King of England on both sides of my paternal lineage. James Adams on the Adams side, and Thomas Kelton on the Holden side. There is also a direct line to 4 Mayflower Passengers on both sides of my Paternal lineage as well as a direct connect to both of the earliest Holden immigrants on each side. Justinian on my Holden side, and Randall on my Adams side. Hope you are feeling well and overcoming your health problems. Have a HEALTHY and Happy New Year. Herb Adams

Hi Ross: Thank you very much for your response. Do you have any Ramsdells in Milford, Hillsboro, NH? or in Portsmouth, Rockingham, NH or in Somerville, MA? According to my grandmother's journal, William had a brother with the initial "N" in Somerville, MA. Thank you, Jean Partlow p.s. In our local genealogy library (Orange County, California) I found an old book, "Genealogy and Family History of the State of NH" Ezra S. Stearns, Lewis Publishing, 1908." It has the genealogy of a William H. Ramsdell, but no mention of the birthplace of Maine (the Maine birthplace is confirmed by the 1850 census).

Ross Andrews, My name is Chris Ramsell and I have been researching my Ramsell Family roots. We found your name on a York County, Maine - Genealogy Web site. It said that you had researched Ramsdell and all variations of that Surname in Cemetery, census, and probate records. I would love to talk to you a bit and find out what you have learned. Specifically I'm interested in any Ramsells in Maine about 1840 or earlier. The oldest ancestor that we've been able to trace was Moses Swett Ramsell born June 6 or 9th 1831 supposidly near Bangor Maine. His parents may have been Eunice Eastman and Benjamin Ramsell, however we have not located these two in any documents. We've started thinking that we may need to research all Ramsell's and Ramsdells in early Maine in order to find his parents. In doing this we ran across a book called "Maine Cemetery Inscriptions of York County Vol.4" which showed a cemetery in Parsonsfield that is full of Ramsell children. Although Moses was supposidly born in Maine, our Ramsells migrated to Ohio, Iowa, Colorado, Calif, and Washington State. You can see our entire Tree on our web site at: http://zebu.cvm.msu.edu/~RamsellK/ Please contact us if you have any information, Chris and Katrina Ramsell

I'm not sure when he was born or died. Her mother's name is Mary Alice Matilda Wilbur. I'm not sure about when she was born or died either. My grandmother also had two sisters that were quite a bit older than her named Hattie and Marion. She also mentioned a brother that died in infancy. I believe his name was Alfred. I am going to be talking to her soon to find out more. I also believe her parents were from Rhode Island. Not positive, but that's what my dad told me. His middle name is Ramsdell. The ancestor that I have been having trouble with is Ebenezer son of Gideon and Paty born April. 11, 1805. You have completely ommited him from the list of their children. His name appears on page 337 Vital stats. for Lynn Mass. My problem is finding proof that he is indeed the same Ebenezer that married Lavinia Roberts of Seabrook NH. about 1828 +/-. They show up in Kensington NH about 1830 and had ten children. He died 1869 and place of birth was given as Lynn MA. but no parents names are listed. The only Ebenezer born in Lynn at that time is listed as a son of Gideon and Paty.

Batten 10 Oct 1738, in Lynn, MA fit into the picture? He had a son
Meshack Ramsdell, born in 14 March 1746/7, in Lynn, MA (also
had sons Shadrack and Abednego), died 27 Oct
1800, in Roxbury, MA, married 2 May 1768, in Lynn, MA, to Sarah Young,
born 20 June 1748, in Lynn, MA, died 1 January 1804, in Roxbury, MA.
Meshack (1746/7-1800) and Sarah Young (1748-1804)
Ramsdell had a son Meshack Ramsdell born 19 May 1771, in Lynn,
MA who married 7 July 1791, in Enfield, CT to Triphena Simons,
born 1772, in Enfield, CT.
I have found no further mention of Meshack and Tryphena
Simons Ramsdale (as they spelled it). However, their daughter, Tryphena,
born in Connecticut in 1793 married John Betts (1789-1853)
of Saratoga and Fulton County, New York sometime around 1811. I therefore assume
that the Ramsdale family must have come to the area of Saratoga
County, New York for their daughter Tryphena to have met and
married John Betts. Meshack and Tryphena
do not show up in census records. They must have died and been buried someplace,
but I can't find them anyplace. They appear to have dropped off the face of
the earth. This has been driving me crazy.
There is a family of Moses Ramsdale that settled in Oneida
County, New York in the 1790s, and Mary Ramsdale wife of Kimball
Ramsdale came to Saratoga County in the 1790s with three of her sons,
William, Jonathan and Silas.
One source has indicated that Mary was a Ramsdell,
herself, daughter of Noah of Lynn, which would make her an
aunt to my Meshack (1771-??). I note, however, that you have
a different Mary married to Kimball.

Im in the great state of Maine, Bangor. Had a dusting of snow Monday but
sunny and nice today. Yesterday I got a book, Maine Made Guns and Their Makers
by Dwight B. Demeritt, Jr., and chapter 6 deals with my line
of Ramsdells and confirms what I initially thought that Charles V. Ramsdell
was indeed the father of Charles S. He also confirms what I
knew in that both father and son were gunsmiths in Bangor in the 1860s.
Charles V. Was Bangors best-known 19th century gunsmith
and provided rifles for a number of Maine soldiers who were entering Maines
First Company of Sharpshooters, organized in 1861. This company became Company
D of Colonel Hiram Berdans 2nd Regiment of U.S. Sharpshooters.
Incidentally Charles V. took one of his guns and committed
suicide in 1886 in his shop, vivid details in the newspaper. The book does tell
me that Charles V, John H, Seth and Frank
were brothers and Charles V. was born in St. Albans, Maine
in 1821. My next step is to pursue the St. Albans info for Charles V.
father. Some fun! Thought you might be interested in this.(Follow-up from

Haven't spoken with you for a while. I finally traced my Charles V.
Ramsdell back to Warren Ramsdell (as you put me on
the track a while back). From the Maine Somerset County 1850 census I found
the three brothers as mentioned in DeMerritt's book--Charles,
Seth, and John--living with Warren
in Ripley. My question to you is from your website, which line is Warren from?
Do you know?

I have been into your WebSite and see you have a Adonoram Judson Ramsdell
in your list of family names and this person was my GG Grand father. He arrived
in Australia from Massatuchesses at an early age. He married Grace Mclean
in Victoria, Australia. His son was Warren David who married
Katheleen Jolley in New South Wales, Australia. Adonaram Judson
dropped the Adonaram and called himself Judson Ramsdell. Judson
died in 1916 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia and is buried in the Coburg Cemetery.
Warren and Kathleen Ramsdell had a male child named Edward
John who married Ida Avis Tindale in New South Wales,
Australia. Edward John died in 1993 in Lakes Entrance, Victoria, Australia.
Edward and Ida had a female child who is Pauline Claire who
married Kevin Austin Shine. They had a female child who is
Jacqueline Margaret who married Stephen Daniel O'Sullivan.
And that is me. I would be very pleased to help you out with all the Australian
information and any other information I may come across. (This is a follow-up
from Tue, 06 May 97)Adonoram
Judson Ramsdell was born in Newton (Newtonville), about 12 miles west
of Boston in Massachusetts on February 4, 1842, to Joshua and Frances.
On September 17, 1861, he enlisted at Readville as a private in CO. M. 1st Regiment
US Massachusetts Volunteer Cavalry. On January 26, 1864, he re-enlisted in the
Independant Battalion of Massachusses Vol. Cav. Under Major Stevens
at Hilton Head Island, South Carolina (where Fort Walker is situated) and was
then transferred to Co. M, 4th Regiment USV Cav. On February 24 he was promoted
to Corporal and on September 25 was promoted to Quater-master Sergeant. According
to his Commonwealth of Massachussets military record, he was honorably mustered
out at Boston Harbour, Mass., on November 14, 1864. However, on his pension
application he states he was honorably discharged at Richmond, Virginia, November
14th, 1865.
Adoniram is described as 5 feet 8 inches tall, with sandy complexion,
hazel eyes and brown hair and that his occupation was a carpenter. His weight
was 180lbs. He had a tattoo of his initials within a circle on his right arm.
After his discharge he stated that he lived in Washington DC until about 1869
beofre returning to Newton. On June 15, 1871, he was married in Providence,
Rhode Island, to Adelaide Augusta Rumrell who was living in
Watertown, a bout four miles north of Newton, Mass., at the time by Congregational
pastor Edward Bartlett. She had been born in New York City
to Artemas and Hannah. Artemas gave
his birthplace as Townsend; there is no Townsend in New York stae, but there
is one in Massachsetts about 45 miles northwest of Newton near the New Hampshire
border. Hannah gave her birthplace as New York. Adoniram and
Addie were both aged 29 and he gave his occupation as freight agent.
Addie died in Newton on July 2, 1875 from diptheria, aged 33years,
10 months and 14 days and was buried there. Adoniram stated
that they had no children.
Adoniram left Newton for Australia on July 12, 1877. He was
married to Grace McIntyre McLean in North Fitzroy on June 4,
1881 by the Rev. Adam Anderson. It was her first marriage.
In 1908 he applied for a US Army pension under the Pension Act of 1907 stating
that he had applied for one about 1904 but had been unsuccessful because he
was still earning a living. In 1912 he re-applied, apparently due to a new Pension
Act have gone through Congress in that year. By then, however, he must have
been on the roll as he quoted his pension number as 1152817. His Pension Certificate
is dated February 13, 1914, backdated to January 7, 1913. The pension was the
grand sum of $25.00 per month was a raise promised to $30.00 in 1917.
After all that dilligent paper-work, Adoniram only lived a
few years with his enhanced income, dying on January 9, 1916 from old age in
Melbourne Hospital. In June of that year his widow Grace applied
for the widow's pension. At that time she was 58 and a resident of Sarsfield,
Victoria, and stated that they had not been divorced although they appear to
having been living separaetly for some time. Grace died on
February 23, 1937, as a result of internal problems associated with a gastric
ulcer.
In 1908 he listed his children as follows: Lella I., August
8, 1881; Aubry J (L?), October 13, 1883; George P.,
March 18, 1886; David Warren., June 15, 1890; Norman
A., September 13, 1893; William Ennis, September 23,
1897. In 1916 the death certificate listed : Lella (34), Aubrey
James (32), George (30), Warren
(28), Norman (22), William (18).
Well, thats about what we know to this point. In fact, its a lot more than we
know about many of the veterans; Adoniram seems to have been
very conscientous in filling out his forms, not to mention persistant, and he
was still able to recall the order and chronology of events extremely well.
If he did die senile, then I'd say that he must have become so only in the last
couple of years of his life. His handwriting in 1912, when he was 70, is still
clear and legible as is his signature, although it has noticeably deteriorated
since 1908.

I am trying to track down the children of William & Frances PARR of Nova Scotia. Based on information from a newspaper, it seems that one of their daughters had married a Walter Ramsdell and was living in Lynn, Mass. (newspaper dated August, 1911). Since William Parr had a number of daughters so I just don't know what one had married the Walter Ramsdell. Her name could be Catherine, b. 1853; Amelia, b. 1856; Kate, b. 1860; or Esther, b. 1866. All born in N.S. I would be ever so pleased if I could find the name of the daughter that did marry this Walter Ramsdell.
From Kevin Ramsdell Date: Wed, 08 May 1996-
According to the 1900 census, William Ramsdell, was living in the town of Lyme, county of Grafton, New Hampshire and was born July 1874 in Vermont. According to Charles W. Ramsdell's, my grandfather, draft registration card dated 1918, he lists William Ramsdell, his father, as nearest relative living in Ashland, New Hampshire. Also found that William and Maude Ramsdell had a daughter, Lillian, born January 1894, and a son Earl, born November 1897 -- both were born in New Hampshire. 1920 census shows Maude Ramsdell living with son Charles W. in Ashland Township, Grafton County, New Hampshire; its also lists her as divorced.
