Sixth Generation

201. Zephaniah6 Ramsdell (Abijah5, Jonathon4, Isaac3, Isaac2, John1) was born 1742.

He married Phebe Baker 1764. Phebe was born 12 Apr 1743. Phebe was the daughter of John Baker and Lillis Bowen. Phebe died 12 July 1822 in Scituate, RI, at 79 years of age. Phebe was "the second child of John and Lillis Baker of Lower Canada". In 1769, Zephaniah Ramsdell and wife and family came from Lynn, Mass. to live in Hope Village, Town of Scituate, State of Rhode Island. He was employed at the Hope Furnace.

Copy:"Nov. 1769: Zephaniah Ramsdell and others have lately come into the Town to dwell and not having gained legal settlement therein and not produced certificate showing them to be settled elsewhere are likely to be chargeable to said Town. It is therefore voted that each and every one of the said persons be notified by the Town Sergeant to depart out of the said Town with their respective families if any they have, within three months from this day and come no more into said Town to inhabit - or produce paper certificate - otherwise they may depend upon being sent to their respective places of lawful settlement by a proper officer as the Law directs."

Copy:"12 March 1770: Zephaniah Ramsdell and others by order of the Town Council warned to depart the Town with their respective families and Stephen Hopkins Esq., Nicholas Brown & Co., Jabez Brown and Rufus Hopkins having givin in writing under their hands to indemnify the said Town which instrument is accepted."

Copy, page 152, Book 2:"Whereas Complaint hath been made to the Town Council by James Williams, one of the Overseers of the poor of the Town of Scituate aforsaid, that Zephaniah Ramsdell and his wife and children are come in to the Town to dweel and are likely to become chargeable to the said Town; and whereas the said Zephaniah Ramsdell and his wife and his children not having gained any legal settlement therein nor produced and certificate showing them to be a settler elsewhere; we the said Town Council upon due proof main therefor and likewise upon due consideration had of the premises do adjudge the same to be true and in do likewise adjudge that the lawful residence of the said Zephaniah Ramsdell and his wife and their children is in the Town of Lynn in the County of Essex in the Province of Massachusetts Bay; therefore it is voted that the Justice of the Peace for said Town of Scituate or some two of the ______ be certified therefore who are hereby requested to make their order to remove the said Zephaniah Ramsdell and his wife and their children from out the said Town of Scituate into the Town of Lynn aforsaid agreeable to the Laws of Great Britian."

Zephaniah Ramsdell and Phebe Baker had the following children:

child + 319 i. William7 Ramsdell was born 26 Oct 1765.

child 320 ii. Lillas Ramsdell was born 25 Apr 1767. Lillas died 17 Jan 1794 at 26 years of age.

child 321 iii. Hannah Ramsdell was born 30 Jan 1769. Hannah died 12 Mar 1840 at 71 years of age. She married Stephen Wilbur 7 October 1813 in Scituate, Providence, RI. Stephen was born 22 Feb 1768. Stephen was the son of Job Wilbur and Lurana Knight. Stephen died 11 Mar 1861 at 93 years of age.

child + 322 iv. Ezra Ramsdell was born 18 Oct 1770.

child + 323 v. John Ramsdell was born 19 Jun 1772.
