75. John5 Ramsdell (Samuel4, Samuel3, Daniel2, Joseph1)(4) was born in Pembroke, Plymouth, MA 15 January 1759. John died 23 May 1807 in Rutland, Rutland, Vermont, at 48 years of age.

He married Eunice Manley 29 November 1787 in Rutland, Rutland, Vermont.(5) Eunice was born 6 November 1767 in Dorset, Vermont. Eunice(6) was the daughter of John Manley Jr. and Jerusha Paddock. Eunice died in New York. Eunice married Daniel Moon of Wallingford 18 July 1813 and, according to church records, moved to Whitehall, New York. John served in the Revolution from Pembroke {Mass.} in 1777 but by 1780 he had moved to Rutland {Vermont}. During the 1780's he was known as the master builder of the East Parish and constructed many of the early buildings which included the first meeting house (1784-1786) that once stood just south of North Main Street Cemetery. He was active in the military and in August 1795 he resigned his command as Lieutenant Colonel of the Rutland Militia. For a time he lived on the east side of North Main Street a little north of Field Avenue, but later moved to the Road to Chittenden (on the west side of the road a little north of R. Barney on the 1854 map). His obituary, which refered to him as an exemplary and respected man, included the following tribute:

A wit's a feather, and a chief's a rod
An honest man's the noblest work of God

John Ramsdell and Eunice Manley had the following children:

child 200 i. Alonzo6 Ramsdell was born in Rutland, Rutland, Vermont 22 October 1789. Alonzo died 7 June 1794 in Rutland, Rutland, Vermont, at 4 years of age.

child 201 ii. Chloe Ramsdell was born in Rutland, Rutland, Vermont 28 April 1791. Chloe died 3 June 1823. She married Robert Barney 21 February 1809.

child 202 iii. Augustus Ramsdell(7) was born in Rutland, Rutland, Vermont 23 July 1793. On 8 January 1817, his mother and stepfather advertised that he was missing. He was a cabinetmaker and had left Lexington, Kentucky for New Orleans, but had become ill. He probable survived, for in June 1818 Lent Ives sued him for defaulting on a mortgage of his late father's lands.

child 203 iv. Thomas Ramsdell was born in Rutland, Rutland, Vermont 3 June 1796. Thomas died 24 August 1797 in Rutland, Rutland, Vermont, at 1 year of age.

child 204 v. Alonzo Ramsdell was born in Rutland, Rutland, Vermont 10 July 1798. Alonzo died 6 December 1803 in Rutland, Rutland, Vermont, at 5 years of age. Alonzo died of a canker rash.

child + 205 vi. Thomas Ramsdell was born 16 November 1801.

child + 206 vii. Joshua Ramsdell was born 1802.

child 207 viii. Mary Ramsdell was born in Rutland, Rutland, Vermont 7 September 1807. Mary died 1 January 1814 in Wallingford, Rutland, Vermont, at 6 years of age.
