285. Homer7 Ramsdell (Joseph6, Joseph5, Joseph4, Thomas3, Daniel2, Joseph1) was born in Hanover, Plymouth, MA 12 August 1810. In the 1850 census (Newburgh, Orange Co, NY) his estate was appraised at $695,000.00.

He married Frances E. L. Powell 16 June 1835. Frances is the daughter of Thomas Powell. Homer Ramsdell was educated at the academy at Monson, Hampshire, Mass. Afterwards, he entered the dry goods trade in New York, where he remained from 1832 to 1840. In 1844, he joined the firm of Thomas Powell & Co., of Newburgh, NY. In June, 1853, he was elected president of the company. He was instrumental in the building of the Hawley branch of the Erie Railroad as well as the construction of the Newburgh and New York Railroad. "Mr. Ramsdell was among the first advocates of a railroad from New England, and fourty years ago made the first reconnoissance of the country preparatory to such an undertaking. The New York and New England Railroad, now about to be opened to Fishkill, will fulfill his early anticipations". (From the "History of Orange County, NY" by Ruttenber and Clark; 1889)
